Hi Beverly,
I can’t help with the second question, but for the first one, no spaces.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] new proofreader questions

I am a new proofreader, looking for help with quotation marks. Currently I am
reading a biography with lots of quoted material.

Question 1: When a single quote mark is followed by a double quote, should
there be a space or no space between the two marks? Example:

“...and that word is 'Tragedy,' " she told them.

Should this be 'Tragedy,'" or 'Tragedy,' " -- how do the tools translate these?

Question 2: This book has many block quotations, which originally appear
indented and in a smaller font, without quotation marks. I read in the archives
that these should be set off with quotes before and after. When one of these
block quotations includes many separate paragraphs, is anything further needed?
In one case, the block quotation is a letter that runs more than 3 pages long,
with many paragraphs. Does one open quote at the beginning and one close quote
three pages later do the trick? Need anything else?

Thanks for any advice from those with more experience!

Beverly
