Generally when you use the gray scale setting, you will not need to change
the brightness. it should not matter what setting you use.

I did several test today with kurzweil 9.02 and the best was grey scale and
the brightness at 50. In fact did a few test using the control/F9 and on a
different setting encounter the J or I 4 times while doing 20 pages at a
time using fine reader. Not bad for both settings I did. Tried Shellie's
suggestion and not bad there either.
