Mayrie, I respect your patience and attention to details. (smile) It makes
you an excellent volunteer. You wrote an awesome post about how you
proofread. I wish I were that organized. I do well just to get the headers
stripped and the page numbers in the same place. Sitting still for that puts
me at my max for attention. I did start looking for the quotes with a space
between them though. Maybe improvement comes in stages. Maybe seeing my
books in Braille will help me see things from your perspective.

Hi Monica,

Actually, bookshare's tools get rid of extra paragraph marks only
when they come two in a row. Those inserted when line endings are respected
are not removed. This can cause some readers to pause in reading the text
where there should not be pauses. That is why I take the time to remove the
ones that come in the middle of paragraphs breaking up sentences between
lines.

Just what I do though. Bookshare has no requirement that we remove those
paragraph marks that shouldn't be there.

Mayrie

Julia, keeping layout information turned on in Kurzweil is a good thing. It
can help you if you ever want to use summary mode or understand how pages of
content from a book are laid out. In most cases, Kurzweil does insert
paragraph marks where they should be. Speech reads them as a new line in the
text. It has no affect on paragraph marks in your books. most of us can't
see your paragraph marks, and Bookshare removes extra ones from your rtf
file to make the daisy and Braille files. Unless your files are one big
run-on sentence spanning the whole 200 pages of a book, or if you have a
book with only two words on each line, don't worry about it. If you know
you're going to have a sighted proofreader, you can take the time to remove
extra paragraph markers yourself. Otherwise, I don't do it because Bookshare
does it automatically. Why spend 20 to 30 minutes doing something Bookshare
will do in a matter of seconds? I see that as wasting time I could be
spending on scanning another book.

Oh no! Don't tell me all of my books are messed up now! I scanned with page
layout info retained, is that a problem? Does that mean that they're now
chalk full of paragraph marks! How on earth do I fix all those!
