I wanted to know what books by Anne Rivers Siddons were in the collection. I
put quotes around her name and all of her books were there right at the
beginning of the list. I didn't have to go to advanced search or even modify my
search.

I took your example of Katherine Applegate and this is what I did to narrow
down the results.
I went to the advanced search link and in the author field I simply typed in
Applegate with no quotes. I got 118 results. then in the combo box to modify
results, I can see books by Katherine Applegate, K.A. Applegate, etc.
