[bksvol-discuss] Re: Question About Protecting Chapters

Sue, In my note to Carrie I wasn't asking to change the numbering; I was just
commenting on why there were two numbers with the books scanned in the office
and only one in books scanned by Kurzweil. The question was asked out of
curiosity, nothing else.

  Hi Jill,
Well, I do not understand what you wanted to change. I just skip over the
two numbers, if there are two, and it doesn't bother me at all. (smile)

I saw on the list where you had asked Carrie to let you download a book and
change the numbering, but I did not understand why you would want to do this.
Is it just for your file, or were you wanting it changed on the site?

  Just curious,

  Sue S.

Sue, When we see two numbers, one is the page number given by the scanning
program which delineates page breaks; at least that's my understanding. In
general, I think the actual print page number is the most important, and unless
others have found this not to be true, it is my impression that Kurzweil
scanned books end up with only this number. Braille books produced by NLS, on
the other hand, show us both the print page and the braille page at least in
some of their books.

    Hi Jill,

I have always thought that was caused by the print page number being
retained, which would be good, and the BRF page number that is put in when the
books are converted. I don't think you, Carrie, have anything to do with there
being two page numbers. It doesn't bother me because I always remember that
there are people who would want to see the print page numbers.

    Just my take on it.

    Sue S.

American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld; I'm reading in BRF format. This is not
the first book in which I have noted this double entry which is why I decided
to ask about it. Jill

      Hi Jill,

Which New York Times book are you reading with 2 numbers after the page
break? I have never put 2 numbers on each page, I put just the page number. I'd
like to know how the book got messed up. I'll investigate if you'll tell me the
book title and author.

      Thanks! Carrie

I find it very hard to believe that validators have been filling in all
of
my page numbers without ever contacting me. When I check my books which I
admit I don't do too often, the page numbers as well as the chapter
headings
have been there. This brings up another issue that I have been wondering
about. When I submit a book scanned with Kurzweil, the print page number
is
the only number shown; however, I am currently reading a book scanned
under
New York Times and after the page break, there are two numbers, one
representing the total number of pages in the book and the other the
print
page. Personally, I prefer having only one number shown. Jill
