I agree, three of my dogs have actually been Seeing Eye dogs, but my first was from Guide dogs for the blind in San Rafael, and now I'm owner/training a dog. I don't object to whatever people call them, just as long as they recognize what rights we have. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Julie Morales Sent: Wednesday, November 16, 2005 12:13 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] OT: Service/guide dogs Hi, Cindy. Guide dog, dog guide...that's all fine, as is service dog, because that includes all dogs that perform some kind of service. Yes, The Seeing Eye is the training school. It's funny, though, because depending on where you are, sometimes, people call all guide dogs Leader Dogs for the school in Michigan, Seeing Eye dogs for the school in New Jersey...it depends on where you are, I guess, but it's always safer to call a guide dog a guide dog or a dog guide. That includes any school. Some people will really go off on a tangent about that if someone in the sighted public calls their dog a Seeing Eye dog. I don't. I pick and choose my battles, I guess, and that one just isn't worth tackling for me right now. I have more important things to object to. *smile* Take care. I appreciate the tip. In the Duncan Maclain stories Seeing Eye is capitalized, and the training school is New Jersey is credited--it's where Maclain got his Schnucke. I think, though, for most sighted people, at least older people the term seeing eye dog has become the term for all guide dogs, much like Kleenex is used for facial tissue and Scotch tape for all of that type of tape. I will remember, however, to use the service dog--unless guide dog is okay to use (it's shorter).
