[bksvol-discuss] O T Candles and sweet scentings

Dear Shelley,

One way I light candles is using very long matches, 18 inches long or so. They sell them for lighting grills and fireplaces. I put the candle in my kitchen sink and strike the match there so I can move the flame around without worrying that falling sparks or match segments will ignite something besides the candle. I do a couple practice moves first using the unlit match and wide spread fingers so I know when my hand is in a certain position relative to the candle it is likely to light. That distance needs to be adjusted as the match burns down. You're pretty smart to fear matches. I've sacrificed some tender skin to my candle habit.

Another method that works pretty well is using a bic lighter for candles. It has a rubber tube whose angle can be adjusted to reach inside deeply set candles such as candles in large jars which seem relatively safe. Before I ignite the lighter, I position the end of the tube right beside the whack and, ahem, fire away.

Using the warmer with tarts sounds like the best idea yet. I tried tarts with candles to provide the heat. I spilled the melted tart twice and gave them up. An electric warmer with the tart in a container with steeper sides would be a great combination for me to try.

When my fingers need a break from reading HP, I'll check out your scent supplier. You can't have too many sources for nice fragrances.

Always with love,

Lissi

lissy,

how do you light the candles?

I can never seem to get the lighter close enough to the flame and matches
scare me, smile.

But I love the electric tart warmer that I bought and it gives off a
pleasant glow in my bedroom not to mention filling my house with fragrance.

It isn't your standard house whee a complete stranger tells you it "smells
fresh" after being shut up for four days and nights, smile.

Dear Robert and Lora,

Lora, You are so welcome. No matter how long it takes you and your friend to
read Deathly Hallows, I hope you'll tell us what you think about it. Your
quote is so apt. Just as each friend is a new world born in us, each fellow reader is the same making every reader's reaction to a book different and of
great interest. I admit I'm a book discussion junkie.

No candles! Say it isn't so! When I bought my house and met with the agent
to buy home owner's insurance, he asked, with a fake chuckle, "You won't be
burning candles will you?" I was so amazed and I think that's what I said
with a half fake chuckle of my own, something like, "I'm amazed you asked
that!" We moved on to other matters so the candle issue went unresolved.

I love scented candles, A candle flame inside a tinted votive in a dark room
is gentle to my light sensitive eyes.
If you decide you have to comply, let us know and I'll send you an electric
candle warmer and some votives. or one of those electric candles with the
tiny flickering faux flame.

you'd better listen to Lora, Robert! No spoilers! Forcing someone to listen
to legalese is one of the unforgivable curses! It's torture! Spoil Deathly
Hallows and Lora's lease will be droning in your brain for years. It's a
sentence far worse than anything you'd suffer at Azkaban.

For anyone new to e-mail book discussions, After we've had a few days to
read and digest Deathly Hallows, if you want to write about the contents of
the latest book, include the word spoiler in the subject line, and before
you begin writing in the body of the message write each letter of the word
spoiler on a separate line which gives skimmers time to realize there's a
spoiler ahead in case they want to ignore or delete the message.

I think you were just messing with our minds, Robert, and look how you
stirred us up!

Always with love,

Lissi

Oh, Robert, you'd better be nice. If you spoil my fun, I'll ... I'll ...
Hunt you down and read this lease to you. In fact, I'll record it, and
play
it repeatedly until you go insane, and start reciting section, subsection
and paragraph references.

Oh, Lissi, thanks for posting this. I was looking for something to do
with
the hours before the book came out, and you've given me several ways
to treat myself.

I have read every HP book over the pone to a friend of mine; we
delight in sharing the story together. That means that it'll take me
longer to
finish
the tale, as I won't read ahead of him, so if I seem to be ignoring
ongoing
HP discussions, that's why.

Looking forward to joining the chat later tonight.

Dear Rui, Cindy and Pottersharians,

National Braille Press has had my order for HP and the Deathly Hallows
for months. At least a dozen times today I wanted to call and tell
them not to forget me and I actually restrained myself from bugging them.

When Half Blood Prince came out I hovered at the computer all day and
downloaded it the minute Gustavo told us it was added to the collection.
That was a Saturday afternoon. To my delight, on Monday, the boxes of
volumes of Half Blood Prince were stacked on my porch. That was
phenomenal!!

Because of Bookshare, Carrie and co. I was reading Half Blood Prince
about
15 hours after the midnight buying frenzy. Because of NBP, I had a
hard
copy
book about 48 hours later. For me, there's nothing like the feel of
paper braille and the act of turning pages and swapping out volumes.
By the time the NBP edition came, I'd finished the book on my braille
note and tore
into
the boxes until I found volume one and happily started my second read
through. The braille availability and timing of receiving both braille
versions was beyond perfection!

I'm going to bed early so I'll be rested when my Potter readathon begins.

If you are itching to read something Harry Potter, try Bookshare's

Dies,
Who
Falls in Love, and How Will the Adventure Finally End?
by

Andy Gordon,

The experts at MuggleNet.com analyze the first six Harry Potter books
and search for hidden clues to predict what the final book might
reveal: Is Dumbledore really dead? Will Harry and Ginny get back
together? Who is the mysterious R.A.B.? Can Ron and Hermione's
relationship last? Whose side is Snape on? Is Harry a Horcrux? Will
Harry defeat Voldemort in the ultimate showdown between good and evil?

It's no surprise that Carrie Carnos scanned this one for us, is it?

http://www.bookshare.org/web/SingleTitle.html?submittitleid=43278

In my opinion, the speculation is based on Rowling interviews and
clues
from
the first 6 books. The reasoning is sound, and the predictions will
heighten
your anticipation for Deathly Hallows. It's also fascinating because
the authors include fan speculations which differ from their own. I'm
having a ball reading this and can't wait to discover which
predictions are correct and which are off target.

If you sample the Barry Trotter parody, you'll be so benumbed by its
silliness that you'll welcome Rowling's prose no matter what she writes!
Beware, the parody is adult rated.

If you're not going to parties or taking a break from the chat room,
here are some links to some reputable HP articles and videos

First here's a link to an article by a reporter for CNBC. I really
enjoyed it. Keith's ideas are worth thinking about. Oh, let him be
wrong! The only deaths I can feel sanguine about are the deaths of a
couple of the plants
in
Professor Sprout's magical greenhouse.

You have to press enter on buttons to continue, twice to finish the
article.

I think you'll be able to hear what to do.

Next is a link to a 10 question HP quiz. to hear kids answer the
questions on the today show, link to the video right after you hear
NBC news video before the beginning of the text version of the quiz.
There are 4 teams
with
2 kids on each. It's fun to hear them answer and also tonotice how the

Show hosts no nothing about HP.

The next link is to an interesting article about Snape, good, evil or
just out for himself. I'm one of those hold outs who can't give up on
the idea that Snape could redeem himself. It's no excuse for his
meanness and
worse,
murdering, but I've always been sadly aware that Snape a neglected
child
who
was unhappy and unloved both at home and at school. Still, Dumbledore
has been kind to and supportive of him...

That's all for now. Having already read the info at these links, I'm
off
to
brouse the net for more and to mark time. Just think, in 24 hours our
reading of Deathly Hallows will be well underway! Lucky us!

Always with love,

lissi
