Hi all, Yes, that’s exactly right. Please move a footnote spanning two pages to the end of the first page. Thanks for asking! I don't know if that's still the case—but it's what I do. Then what happens in print is that the continued note has a line above it--not a dashed line but a straight horizontal line. I don't see how you do both that and asterisks without creating confusion. But both would be needed, wouldn't they? ----- Original Message ----- From: Deborah Murray (Redacted sender "blinkeeblink@xxxxxxxxx" for DMARC)<mailto:blinkeeblink@xxxxxxxxx%22%20for%20DMARC)> To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 11:53 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: New proofreading requirements: quotes, ellipses, and dashes Hi Kim, Richard, et al, I'm curious, too, regarding the identification of superscripted footnote numbers using various AT reading devices. I read a lot of Bookshare books using Kurzweil 1000, and it doesn't recognize superscript as far as I can tell. I also can't create a superscript in K1000 when I'm scanning/proofing my books. I wonder who is doing the testing and on what equipment. Madeleine? As to formatting the footnote section at the bottom of a page... We are supposed to re-connect words split across pages, but not sentences. I know, it can make reading a bit clunky, but that's the rule. A while back some folks wanted us to insert [Begin footnots], or something similar where the page transitions to footnotes. Most of us who expressed an opinion were NOT in favor of the extra verbiage, and we were told not to do so at that time. When I'm formatting a book I scan, I insert a line of asterisks between the end of the body text and the section of footnotes at the bottom of the page, just like we're supposed to do to indicate other transitions. I think any more than that is too intrusive. I guess I don't think it's too much to ask readers of BS books to know how to use their equipment and software. It really isn't that hard to figure out where the footnotes begin as long as there is some indicator of the blank line that usually appears in a print book. As a reader, then, of the books from Bookshare, when the footnotes are in there, and with the number and the super script, how does the reader know that is what they are getting to? In my experience, I can be reading a sentence near the bottom of the page, and it drops off and you come to the footnotes. 2 questions. 1. When this occurs does the instructions say to make that sentence complete before the footnote, by grabbing the text on the next page, or something like that? 2. Would it be so bad to just have the text word Footnote before the footnote’s numeral? And in brackets? Sorry if this is off topic. Or covered already somewhere before. Perhaps I just need to be a better reader. Thanks. Richard
