Okay, Stacey, still and all, it's a necessary part of the job to be familiar
with what OCR errors you come across so they can be deleted. The submitter
will be grateful and so will future readers. If you are meticulous (a really
nice way of saying "picky") then the book will be a joy to read. What I
think the job description is that our main job is to make sure the submitted
file is up to that excellent quality rating or as near to perfect as we can
make the file without going stark staring nuts. When I proofread a file, I
really like to communicate with a submitter to let him/her know what I'm
discovering in the file. If the submitter is careful, making sure all the
text is there, my job is to treat that file with the same care and attention
the submitter had in scanning and preparing it for Bookshare. I want to
catch anything he/she missed. Ultimate goal, making the submitter look
really good, nice-looking and readable file which is a joy for future
readers. Now that gives me satisfaction. Believe it or not, there are folks
on this list who would rather pull out their teeth rather than proofreading.
For some reason peculiar to me, I can have a great time reading a book I
like and still have that little editor in my brain to attend to deleting
scannos and correcting them, stripping headers, and the like. Regards and
happy proofreading, Kim.

Kim,
I'm only good at proofreading.
I don't have a scanner so can't scan.

Hi, Stacey, the file you download is in .rtf, so if you have it in a folder
and press the enter key, your document will automatically open in Word.
Basically what you're doing (if you are like some of us) is to read the
whole file from start to finish and if you encounter any scanning errors,
you delete the error and write in what the text should be (example, let's
say you see a sentence "We had to drive the cattle into the bam." Now this
last word has a scanning error, and I bet you might have thought to yourself
"Hmm! That word should read "barn" not "bam". So you get rid of the M in
"bam" and write in the RN to make the word correct.) I think you can ask for
a list of common scanning errors and what they will most likely be. I think
if you start out proofreading a really great scan, then you hardly need do
anything. When you feel more confident, there are tips for formatting your
file to get it into Bookshare's specifications (font, page setup, paragraph
presentation, formatting of pages, stripping of headers and the like.) I
don't know how you learn, Stacey, but I know there is a proofreading manual
on the Bookshare site, but if that overwhelms you, get what you can, and
keep asking questions of list members. I find proofreading a whole lot less
intimidating than scanning. There are others on this list who can scan and
proofread and they can give you the ins and outs of both subjects. I've been
helped a great deal through some folks on this list. Regards, Kim.

Thanks,

Hi, Stacey, welcome to the merry gang. If you have questions of any kind,
folks will be glad to help you out. I proofread books I like for Bookshare.
Whatever you do, whether scanning and submitting books or proofreading,
you're welcome. Regards, Kim Friedman.
