[bksvol-discuss] Re: Footnotes Again

The worst case of footnote mania that I've seen was William Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".

There were a couple of places where there were a couple of sentences on a page and the rest filled with footnotes. Fortunately, usually the footnotes were interesting in themselves.

o.k. I won't argue. smile--chapter notes, then, or
bibliographic notes. On the other hand, suppose we
think of a book as having a beginning and an end, or a
front and a back, or a head and a foot...then....?

I do prefer them at the end rather than at the bottom
of the page when they are bibliographic but I like
them at the bottom of the page when they are
explanatory.

When validating, btw, I don't usually bother
validating the notes at the end of the main text,
though I do the ones at the bottom of the pages, or
bibliographies or indices. I do glance at them and
figure they are usable as they are, but I offer, in
the long synopsis, to get the book and do them if the
reader needs me to. So far no one has requested that.

Yes, but those that are listed at the end of the
book and at the end of a
chapter are not footnotes. According to the three
definitions I have read so
far, footnotes are only at the bottoms of pages.
