Brief Synopsis:
The author introduces the reader to one of North America's more unusual
animals, the Porcupine. What is it about this animal who is not related to a
pig, but is prickly and pointy.

Long Synopsis:
Profusely illustrated with photographs by the author "It has been said that
nothing is more peculiar than a porcupine. He waddles when he walks. He minds
his own business. He runs from nothing. And he never starves. He has been
accused of being stupid, but he can learn to manipulate his way out of a cage
with fewer trials than a monkey. He can swim, croon a love song, climb the
tallest tree, sleep like Somnus and eat with his hands." Thus David Costello
begins his story of a unique and fascinating denizen of the woodlands. After 15
years of studying and photographing this often-maligned underdog of nature,
David Costello is able to bring to readers an appreciation and understanding of
the "spiny pig." Like other books in the Living World Series, The World of the
Porcupine describes the animal in its seasonal occupations from spring into
summer and fall into winter, its adaptations for life in the woods, its enemies
and methods of defense, its love-making and peculiar eating habits. The author
answers dozens of questions: Do porcupines throw their quills? Are they
practically naked in winter? Do they make nests? How do they breed? Do they
have voices? Are they good to eat? Are they protected by law? Do they make good
pets? By writing sympathetically of the porcupine's life in its own world, the
author says, "I hope to dispel much of the exaggeration about this unique
animal, and impel all people who love wild things to learn more of its
secrets."
