Hi, Scott, thanks for clarifying what you meant. Regards, Kim. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Scott Rains Sent: Friday, August 06, 2010 3:26 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Image Descriptions in Children's Books Yes, I mean "implement" volunteer ideas. Sometimes that might mean changing policy, clarifying instructions, adding or subtracting a step in processing, writing a new section in the manual, or even building a database, software tool, or web page. The process can be slow. It seems especially so from off-site when all the necessary preparations are not apparent. Still, we're all pulling in the same direction. Sorry, the non-engineering-non-computer linguist is showing. What does "operationalize" mean? Regards, Kim Friedman. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Scott Rains Sent: Friday, August 06, 2010 11:18 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Image Descriptions in Children's Books Debby and everyone, How timely this thread on image description in children's books is. I encourage everyone to read through the note from Jim Fruchterman and Betsy Beaumon that Nicole Gnutzman has just posted. It reaffirms how central the Bookshare volunteer community is to the identity of Bookshare and, I hope, gives you confidence that quality work like image descriptions is not permanently lost as we work through the practical implications of the PQ influx. In fact, I read the note as an invitation to the volunteer community to continue down the path we have been following by adding value with image descriptions, as Series Captains, seeking out little publicized books or presses, tackling multi-lingual books - or as our "Bookshare Betty Crockers" have done - cookbooks. Any brave souls considering picking up the textbook gauntlet? Let's take Jim and Betsy's note as a call to generate some new ideas and I will follow up at my end to help you operationalize them. I downloaded and read "No, David" last night. I'm a sucker for kids books with those lovely picture descriptions. All of the picture descriptions were there. If not, the book would have been trashed, since the text would be nothing without the picture descriptions.
