Hi picture describers!

My husband recently gave a presentation concerning access technology for people who are blind or have low vision and discussed our experiences.

After the presentation, a student named Kathleen talked with Bruce and said that she is interested in describing pictures. She is not a Bookshare volunteer, but is presently describing children's art work that is displayed in the university library or will be. Any tips on describing pictures would help Kathleen do an excellent job. I'm thinking about what decision must be made in determining what is important in a picture to convey the meaning that will enhance the story, for example, since describing every tiny detail might be too much, especially for younger children, as well as any other thoughts you think would be beneficial. She might already have questions.

Please email Kathleen directly rather than me, since this is her project.

Kathleen's e-mail address is: klonbom@xxxxxxxxx

Here is what my husband said in his email.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give Kathleen.

Hi Deb:

I just finished meeting with Kathleen Lonbom, and it is OK for you to pass her e-mail address on to the group of Bookshare volunteers directly involved with providing descriptions for pictures/illustrations in books. At present, she is focusing on children's artwork, but may be branching out into other areas in the future.

Kathleen's e-mail address is: klonbom@xxxxxxxxx

Please let me know if I can provide any assistance.

Thanks for your help with this.
