It rained here 1 inch on Saturday morning, then 2.9 inches Sunday afternoon. More is expected late today. Our early tobacco plants are supposed to be ready to transplant today. I've invented a new weather homily for the occasion - A Solitary Sandpiper in your tobacco patch is a sign that ground is too wet to work. My new homily probably won't catch on, since 99% of farmers around here don't know one bird from another. But to me it's kind of an unusual thing to find a Solitary Sandpiper hunting on ground I expect to soon plant in tobacco. Not a favorable sign. I posted 1 pic of this Solitary Sandpiper on the KOS Flickr site. Link is below body of all posts. I'm beginning to think my semi-permanent resident Ring-necked Duck can fly but just doesn't like to. Lately he's switched several times from the middle field to the back field pond - a long way for him to walk through tall grass. His occasional buddies recently have included a female Blue-winged Teal, 2 male and 2 female Mallards and a Coot.
