Judy and I completed our bluebird nest box monitoring chores today for the
month of May, and I feel compelled to share an unusual "sighting" with the
listserv. In a location at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (to
be more specific, in the Tennessee portion of the LBLNRA), I opened a nest box
that contained two leucistic Eastern Bluebird nestlings (and three addditional
bluebird nestlings with normal plumage). In 31 years of monitoring nest boxes,
we have documented more than 40,000 bluebird eggs---I have examined perhaps
more than 20,000 bluebird nestlings---and these are the first leucistic
bluebird nestlings we have found. I know this listserv has a policy which
discourages photographs embedded in, or attached to, messages. Consequently,
if you are interested in seeing a couple of photos of these baby birds, please
send a message to mtman1@xxxxxxxxx.
