Walked up another stretch of Whip-poor-will Creek this afternoon. A pair of
Rough-winged Swallows kept circling near a rock ledge. I found a moss covered
mud nest with eggs beneath the ledge, then saw one of the adults lighting at
another spot. Checked that spot and a young swallow came flying out of a small
crevasse. A little further upstream I saw a group of 5 Rough-winged Swallows.
Not sure if the nest with eggs even belonged to the swallows. Might have
belonged to a Phoebe. Other good views - a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher drying off
after a bath. An Acadian Flycatcher close enough for a picture, but it wouldn't
hold still. Also found a small colony of the semi-aquatic plant, arrowhead.
Usually found by still water, they were growing beside an island where water
only flows when the creek is high. Would have walked further if the sole of my
old shoe hadn't nearly come off.
