Small Road Runners, (RR)....you got that right. The biggest bird coming to our
yard on an everyday basis. And, what a long tail they have,, the Brown
Thrasher. Reminds me of my old KY middle school pal, Billy, who now lives in
Albuquerque, NM, west side, with a desert for a yard, but a yard that Road
Runners regularly hop over a tall wall and into his nice evening sitting area.
RR common in the Bosque del Apache, NWR, a favorite Nov. birding destination.
And, I once saw a RR near the interstate in East OKLA, but, never in KY.

When I first looked out the window to a brush line in the back yard, I thought
I was seeing a couple of smallish rabbits, but binoculars showed they were
brown thrashers - and they're BIG. Bigger than I thought they normally are.
They look like small road-runners with their long tails. I can't tell male
from female as they both look alike to my untrained eyes. Neat birds.
FYI, while I have cats, they never go outside, even though I have plenty of
acreage and sit well off the road. I don't let the cats out for their own
safety, but also to protect the birds that I selfishly lure in with seed, suet
and nectar so I can spy on them from my perch inside the house.
PS - going to my youngest granddaughter's 4th grade today for bird "talk" but
taking them lots of goodies (house, feeder, seed, books) in hopes of inspiring
them to pay attention to birds and to protect the planet and its inhabitants.
Happy Earth Day to all this week!
