I put up one of those window mounted bird feeders on my second story office
window. I filled the feeder with some unsalted in-shell peanuts.
I mostly see Tufted Titmice visit the feeder, but I've seen a White-breasted
Nuthatch once, and a Red-bellied Woodpecker twice. The Red-bellied didn't seem
to understand how to eat from the feeder, hanging underneath and pecking at the
clear plastic.
The Tufted Titmice were pretty skittish at first, but they've seemed to have
gotten used to me watching from a mere 3 feet away. Today I was able to watch a
Titmouse hold a peanut between its feet and peck at the shell until it exposed
one of the nuts. Then the bird wrestled the nut through the opening, twisting
its tiny head back and forth like a dog playing tug-of-war. When the bird
finally retrieved the nut, it dropped the shell so it could grab the nut with
its feet. The bird then pecked at the nut for a few minutes presumably eating it
in small chunks.
I enjoyed watching the Titmouse eat, but I was a little disappointed how much
was wasted. I ordered some shelled unsalted peanuts to see if they're less
wasteful.
