I’m envious of you who are reporting early Warblers, but my weekend highlight
has been a Tufted Titmouse that’s been singing optimistically in the woodlot,
across the road from the house. They used to be the sound of spring here. We
could always count on their songs, starting on the first warmish days in
February, and they were ubiquitous around the feeders, year round. Then,
starting about two years ago, they gradually disappeared, and now it’s normal
for us to go for months without seeing or hearing one.
I read an article, recently, about their decline in Pennsylvania, resulting
from West Nile disease. I wonder if that’s what we’re seeing.
I hope this bird is the start of their return, here.
