Subject: [birdky] Trumpeter Swan and other waterfowl at Reformatory Lake
Joyce Bender and I visited Reformatory Lake in Oldham County this morning. At
first the Trumpeter swan was very sleepy as was the two mute swans, but then
they started moving around and preening, presumably as it warmed up. While we
were there, two flocks of Sandhill cranes flew close overhead. On the way back,
we took a detour to Bennett Field and got a brief look at the rough-legged hawk
reported yesterday by David Bailey and Andrew Melnykovych. Lots of kiting
kestrels and red-tailed hawks and another flock of about 27 cranes on the
drive. Beautiful day! When we left Northern Franklin County for Oldham County
with temperatures of 32 d, there was quite a bit of snow along the roadsides,
but on our return with glorious, much welcome temperatures of 56 d and sunny,
much of the snow and ice had melted.
Happy Birding!
