Personally, I would never use any oil, grease, or vaseline anywhere near my
feeders, as the risk of getting it on feathers is too great. *Please don't
do this.*
I've cleaned up oiled birds in FL and have seen what oil sludge can do to
feathers and birds. They just can't clean it off themselves, and could
cause trouble if ingested during preening. The same is true for cooking
oils (even natural oils).
Try cayenne or squirrel baffles. Neither can kill birds, but greasy
material can and will.
