Judging by what Channel 13 radar was showing a couple of hours ago, I suspect
some of us got hit pretty hard by the storms that just passed through. At one
point I could see Shane zoom in on the map close enough to see the exact
location of our house. He made sweeping motions on the map to show funnel cloud
paths, at the same time saying those of you living here need to get to your
safe place. Both phones began making crazy alert noises and telling us the same
thing. A small closet beneath the stairs is the closest thing we have to a safe
place. We didn’t go there. Instead, I simply watched though a window for a
funnel cloud's approach.
This place took a direct hit by a tornado many years ago and I saw it coming.
Insurer declared one barn totaled. My older brother and I tried every which way
to pull that barn’s wood pin connected core down.
Brother eventually declared, “We can’t pull it down. Guess we’ll have to fix
it.”
Fix it we did.
Shane also mentioned a silo being destroyed near Olmstead. I have to wonder if
it was the one that Brainard recently asked me about getting permission for
some one to visit on a bird count. I’ll check later and see, but not today. One
of the worst memories of the tornado that did hit here was watching storm
tourists driving slowly along our usually quiet road in the storm’s immediate
aftermath.
