We counted 54 species this weekend. The FOS Redstart, yesterday, was a
highlight, along with five Swallow species for the weekend. I counted 10
Purple Martins, this morning, and got a photo with nine of them lined up on the
wire – Flickr link follows. Yesterday, we watched a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk
carry a Northern Flicker away from the south yard. We could not see what it
had been holding in the grass, until it flew, and the Flicker was actually big
enough that the hawk struggled to carry it. I Flickr posted a photo of the
Cooper’s, taken while it was still in the grass.
I continue to marvel at the old oak snag, in the woodlot across from the house.
It is a bird magnet. I scoped it from the west end of our property, late
yesterday, and counted two Flickers, two Kingbirds, and a Redbelly, in the
