31 August 2005 After further study, primarily based on behavior, I am going to retract my call of a Sooty Tern and 2 probable Sooty Terns at Taylorville Lake yesterday evening. While the plumage of 1 bird (to the degree it could be observed in rain with foggy equipment) was a dead ringer for an adult in transition from Breeding to Post Breeding Adult Sooty as illustrated in Sibley, the manner of flight as led me to believe that a Black Tern immature may have been a better call. The bird did not really resemble Black Terns as illustrated in any field guide, but the manner of flight was not what I would expect, upon further review, for Sooty Tern and similar to what I would expect for Black Tern. Therefore, I withdraw the "claim" and hope not many people expended time looking for the bird (unless they found it and agreed with my original call).
