I got up early and drove down to Crittenden County to do Big Rivers WMA & SF
(that report will come later).
I decided after that to check the Sloughs Wood Tract south.
While checking out the shorebirds I heard what I thought was a Sandhill Crane
to the south. I heard it a couple of times and figured I was hearing things. So
after looking at the shorebirds at Wood Tract south I drove around to the
shorebird Unit.
There I found 9 Great Egrets and 2 Great Blue Herons, and 3 Lesser Yellowlegs
and 2 Raccoons. I started to walk along the dike then saw 2 Sandhill Cranes
back in NW corner. It is rare that we get Sandhill Cranes this far west in KY.
Made my day. First I have seen this year, discounting any in Florida back in
February. I walked back in the soybean field to get some shots, but decided not
to approach very close. I took a few shots and then headed back to my Jeep
walking on air.
