The KOS/Beckham field trip to the Sloughs WMA in Henderson County today was attended by 11 observers who recorded 81 species. Highlights are as follows: American Bittern Least Bittern (2) Bald Eagles with 3 young in nest King Rail Virginia Rail (8) new state high count Sora (30+) Black-necked Stilt (3) Sedge Wren Shorebird/waterfowl habitat was good at Muddy Slough (across the gravel road from Hardy Slough), and the majority of those birds were found there. Rail habitat was excellent at Pond Creek Marsh, and all observers had outstanding prolonged looks at many of the birds, including multiple Virginia Rails at our feet. The King Rail was flushed twice and seen by all observers. One of the Least Bitterns (Muddy Slough)landed in a tree and allowed a close approach providing all with leisurely through-the-scope views of that gorgeous bird. It was a fabulous day to be in the marshes, and I appreciate the work of all who attended to help make is such a great day. dave __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
