There is a stiff wind from the south this morning and the sky in the east was
pink, which brought to mind the old saying, “pink sky in the morning, sailors
take warning!”. Unsettled weather is coming. It was sunny but there were hints
that this was coming, last evening, and I realized as soon as I got out with
the scope before sunset that the Harriers were riding the breeze from the
south, heading toward their roost, to the north. So, I started counting by
sweeping the southern horizon. I was at around 20 Harriers when a Short-eared
Owl crossed my field of view. It was about a mile south, over the Trimble Road
fields where they roosted two years ago. This was the opposite direction from
where I expected to see them. I promptly lost track of Harriers but counted 3
Owls in that direction before swinging around to my viewing slot, through the
trees to the north and counted 14 more in the next fifteen minutes or so. Very
few of them lingered over the radishes, but quickly headed up and away, toward
the east and southeast, making it easy to keep track of their numbers. We had
a glut of owls over those same fields, last year, which lasted until the
very-cold streak killed the radishes. After that, we saw owls but not in the
same numbers. We’re hoping the cold weather holds off.
