Matt Stickel and I joined some others at Lake Shelby this evening for some
really nice study of the Limpkin. It is securing the same species of freshwater
mussel that the Logan County bird was eating, Paper pondshells (Utterbackia
imbecillis).
At one point the bird wandered too close to a Killdeer nest and the Killdeer
took it on without hesitation . . . it seemed like a David vs. Goliath moment,
but the Killdeer prevailed, chasing the Limpkin into flight!!! As soon as the
battle was over the Limpkin, looking a bit embarrassed, even gave out a couple
of its wailing calls!!!!
