We haven’t added a Red-headed Woodpecker to our list for 2022 and I was hoping
to spot one, this morning. I was scanning the ash tree skeletons in the woods
along Sinking Creek, west of the house, when three Sandhills flew through my
view. I had assumed they were all north of here after reading the memorials
for the winter-2022 Sandhill season, earlier this week.
I also spotted the leucistic Red-tail, about a mile away, resting on a snag
that was visible through the screen of trees limbs. We had not seen it much
lately but Rickey Shive apparently found this year’s nesting site, along Denise
Road, yesterday. That’s a little further away than normal and explains our
fewer recent sightings.
Still no Red-headed.
