Brainard Palmer-Ball just called to tell me that on his way to Western Kentucky for some field work, he decided to stop by the Cecilia area to see if the F2 tornado there had affected the Sandhill Cranes wintering in the area. Unfortunately, he was able to find at least 15-20 dead cranes (and at least one dead coyote) that had been killed. Among the several hundred Sandhills still alive in the area, he did briefly see a Whooping Crane take off but did not get a great look at it, nor was he able to relocate it. It was approximately 3/4 mi east of the firehouse on hwy 86. The cranes are often seen in the farmland next to the firehouse west of the town of Cecilia on hwy 86 (Gazetteer p 48, E3), but do move around quite a bit in scattered groups across the surrounding farmland.
