Noticed the other day where they split Crittenden by the airport that they
leveled the area to the south of the post office making promising looking
habitat, so on Wednesday I had 20 min. before work to check it out.
Highlights of the 15 or so species were kingbird, blue grosbeak, indigo
bunting and killdeer. Was hoping I might find a Dickcissel that wandered
over or perhaps a grasshopper sparrow, but both were a stretch. Oh well.
Other birds seen around town wandering are red-eyed and warbling vireo,
orchard oriole, phoebe and barn swallows being chased by a cooper's hawk.
I've never lived in a place with such a wonderful suite of birds to greet
me every morning; vultures, red-shouldered hawk, all woodpeckers except
red-headed and pileated, great-crested flycatcher, both wrens, nuthatch and
a yellow-throated warbler that just stopped singing 3 days ago, who
successfully fledged at least two young. Our most recent visitor has been a
teenage doe. Makes up for all the working.
Migration is right around the bend; should get the first southbound
redstarts any day now.
Good birding,
