A duck hunter named Ryan Watkins called me Thursday afternoon and said he had
been told of 2 different loons being hit by cars in our neighborhood and that
there were 3 live loons on a pond on Orndorf Mill Road. When he described the
pond, I realized it was my nephew’s pond. I didn’t follow up his report at the
time because I was stripping tobacco at that same nephew’s barn. It would have
taken until nearly dark to go home, scrub all the tobacco gum off my hands and
get back to the pond + it was way too overcast for any good photos. I did
follow up Friday morning, but the loons were gone.

middle of Schochoh Road, this morning, about 1/2 mile from the house. I
thought “why would a goose be on the road..?” I turned the car around for a
closer look and found a Loon instead!
Our weather was as ugly as ever, last evening, and we’re guessing that it
mistook the wet road for water, landed, and then was unable to get airborne
again. What a shame!
On a brighter note, a Siskin was visiting the feeders, this morning, in the
dim early light before I left for work.
