A Fox Sparrow continues under our feeders, even though the snow has been mostly
gone since early Wednesday. It seems to look for the larger cracked corn
chunks, which it works over extensively before going to find another. It does
the comical chicken-scratching thing that makes the debris scatter behind. I
think FOSP are normally in our area, through the winter, but we rarely see them
except in really harsh winter conditions. They seem to be just too dignified to
mix with the “commoners”, around the feeders. The snow has been gone for days
and it is downright balmy, but this one has abandoned its dignity to take
advantage of the easy-pickings, around the feeders.
On the downside, our SEOW numbers have dwindled, through this week. We counted
20 on Monday and three last evening. The local grain crops (where they were
roosting) froze down very significantly. The lush green growth is now wilted
and sparse, maybe not deep enough for them to hide in. I’m wondering if some
have gone in search of better roosting ground, or headed further south during
this weather break.
