[birdky] Report: Olmstead CBC Summary

Friends,
The 14th consecutive Olmstead Christmas Bird Count was held on 28 December
2006. The Count circle includes SW Logan County and extreme SE Todd County.
Exactly 60 species were observed during the Count with 5 count period
species additionally observed, as of today. Participants were Frank Lyne,
David Roemer, and I.
Count highlights of were 2 American Woodcocks, occurring on this Count for
the first time, and 24 Chipping Sparrows, smashing the Count record number
for this species. Other highlights were Count numerical records for
Eastern Phoebe at 5
American Kestrel at 57
Mourning Dove at 600+ &
White-throated Sparrows at 118.
Misses on Count Day included both species of Kinglet & Cedar Waxwing.
Perhaps the most shocking miss was Common Grackle.
The weather was warm and partly cloudy. In general, warm winter indicator
species such as Carolina Wren were high and cold winter indicator species
such as Lapland Longspur were low (These indicator species are my own and do
not reflect anything but my opinion). Red-tailed Hawk numbers, which have
been a point of previous discussion on this venue, numbers were slightly
below average this year at 15. This assessment does not take into account
party numbers and/or hours.
The main accomplishment of this CBC was to offer the GOOD TIME of bird
observation to 3 guys with nothing better to do (apparently).
