I get fussed at by the blue jays AS I’m filling up the feeders! Takes a lot of
nerve! I like the red-breasted nuthatch that we had a couple years ago who
would land on the feeder as I was hanging it up! Very trusting sort!

Although I might be exaggerating slightly when I sometimes lay claim to
being able to read the specific words in the thought bubbles of other
creatures, I am more fluent in creature thought bubble reading than I am in
any other human language beyond English. Other creatures are equally adept at
reading my thought bubbles. Moments before I dump out my little drawstring
sack of cracked corn and sunflower seed at the back field stakeout,
White-crowned Sparrows begin cueing up in anticipation. They know I’m no
danger to them and begin coming in with me a few feet away. Same with the
yard feeder birds. Red-tailed Hawk isn’t quite as trusting, but the one I see
most often will remain in place as long as I’m looking at it, then take off
the moment I look away, as if it doesn’t like me to know which way it’s
headed. I captured my first Junco of the season this morning at the yard
feeder.
