[birdky] RPT: Woodburn transient lakes, 3/9/2014, 20 spp waterfowl, first shorebirds

Rob Lane, Brian Davis, and I visited the transient lakes in southern Warren
County yesterday afternoon. Nice afternoon with 20 spp of waterfowl and 4 spp
of shorebirds.
On the way down I-65, we pulled off on the shoulder to see 3 Red-necked Grebes
that Matt Stickel had notified us about on the borrow lake on the west side
just north of the jct. with Joe Prather Highway (Exit 102; KY 313).
Highlights:
McElroy Lake: 3 American Golden-Plovers (heard them call right before they
dropped in on the lakeshore for less than 10 seconds and flying off to the
northwest); ducks in roughly decreasing abundance ... Redhead, Mallard,
Gadwall, Canvasback, No. Pintail, Common Goldeneye, Green-winged Teal, American
Black Duck, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Northern Shoveler, Hooded
Merganser, American Wigeon, Wood Duck, Greater Scaup, Bufflehead. A couple of
hundred American Coots and a few Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, American
Pipits,and Wilson's Snipe.
Walton Pond: 15 Greater White-fronted Geese, 250 Redhead, 1 male Blue-winged
Teal.
Chaney Lake: 9 Pectoral Sandpipers, 90+ Green-winged Teal, 10 American Wigeon
plus others.
On the way home we stopped in at Cecilia for a few minutes at sunset and
counted maybe 750-1000 birds coming in to roost at three different ponds.
