Returned to western Fulton County just 11 days after last being there, but
water levels, unfortunately and as expected, had completely changed. Only one
spot in the Upper Hickman Bottoms had shorebirds and not too many. In the Lower
Hickman Bottoms, the gates at the pump station had been opened a little sooner
than I had expected and Open Pond was just mud with very few shorebirds.
Friday's rain had raised a few pools but there were few birds on that "new"
water.
Highlights included a single flyover American Golden-Plover, nice numbers of
Long-billed Dowitchers and a single early Short-billed with one group;
scattered Dunlin; and lots of Greater Yellowlegs. The pool at the Long Point
observation tower had *at least* 185 of the last, most right up next to the
road in the deeper water snatching up small crayfish and tadpoles. Very fun to
watch their antics. Also present in various pools at Long Point were one Little
Blue Heron and a few Snowy Egrets. A foraging flock of Cattle Egrets out along
KY 1282 was nice.
The cool weather kept songbird activity down, but I did hear one of the
Swainson's Warblers along Running Slough Road. The levee near Lake No. 9 is not
yet buried in birds, but plenty of Orchard Orioles and Red-headed Woodpeckers,
a couple of Dickcissels, and the season's first Bobolink.
