Mark Monroe and I ran down to the Mississippi River Monday afternoon. We were
literally run out of the Lower Hickman Bottoms by the *absolute* worst
mosquitoes I've ever experienced in KY. A cloud of 50 or more followed us as we
drove or walked *wherever* we were along the levee in the Lake No. 9 vicinity.
Have no idea how long this onslaught will continue, but they are certainly to
be avoided!
There were essentially no waders in the Lake No. 9 area, in part because the
lake remains high. There were a few common shorebirds there and on the toe of
the Island No. 9 sandbar on the other side of the levee but the only noteworthy
thing was a Ruddy Turnstone (heard only) flying down the river.
Yesterday we birded along the river in Carlisle County and were pursued by very
few biting flies, fortunately. We tallied 15 species of warblers along Lower
River Road and found Missisippi Kites to still be around. Broad-winged Hawks
were migrating in small groups. The river has come back up some in recent days,
so the sandbars had very few shorebirds, although a juv. Red-necked Phalarope
and 3 Sanderlings were of note at the end of KY 1308 viewing spot.
We decided to head to Ky Lake and Lake Barkley for shorebirds, but the lakes
have come up in recent days and shorebird habitat is entirely covered again. We
reverted to lake scanning but couldn't find much of interest other than a few
Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 3 Black Terns.
A one and a half day trip to far western KY 14-15 September and we tallied only
SIX species of shorebirds . . . astonishing.
