Steve & Teresa Graham joined Brian Wulker and I on a tour for some west KY
birding Fri-Sat.
We started Friday at Horseshoe Road and the Camp Mines in Union County and
ended the day at Lake No. 9. Charlie already reported highlights at Horseshoe
Road including the 2 continuing Black-necked Stilts and a Buff-breasted
Sandpiper. We had a total of at least 12 Bobolinks flying over with 2 stopping
in for some pics.
The Camp Mines in Union County had some shorebirds but not as many as a week
ago. Highlights included 4 Buff-breasteds and 2 Baird's at Camp #9. Cliff
Swallows were numerous everywhere with smaller numbers of all others.
At Lake No. 9 we watched a relatively small number of waders come in to roost,
and the smaller species (15-20 or so Little Blues and Snowies) actually left
for a roost spot across the Miss River. We probably only had about 300 Great
Egrets come in to roost. At dusk, Purple Martins began to collect over the
river and we ende up finding the roost on the MO side of the river opposite the
south end of Lake No. 9. This roost has traditionally been at or north of
Hickman. Earlier in the early evening we were successful in finding an Alder
Flycatcher along Elbow Slough Road.
Yesterday we started at Hickman and after a couple of hours again in the Lower
Bottoms, we ran up along the river to Wickliffe. Highlights included *2* Alder
Flycatchers along Elbow Slough Road, probably 8-10 Loggerhead Shrikes in the
Lower Bottoms, a Canada Warbler, and an Olive-sided Flycatcher along the
unnamed county road southwest of Hailwell, Hickman County. The Miss River
sandbars upstream from Doug Travis WMA and upstream from the Laketon Boat Ramp
had 9 species of shorebirds including 4 Baird's and a Buff-breasted. There were
also at least a couple of Least Terns upstream from the ATV parking lot at
Laketon. Shorebird habitat is decent there, but I noticed the river is supposed
to come back up a couple of feet in coming days, so it might have to drop again
for habitat to get better. Sedge Wrens were heard at Long Point at at Doug
Travis WMA.
Brian "Mr. eBird" Wulker has numerous eBird lists submitted from the two-day,
121 species, adventure.
It was nice to have west KY roads back to normal. An employee at one of the
Quick Marts at the Beaver Dam exit told me Monday at work was "worse than Black
Friday at Walmart!" They almost ran out of gas and she said the Wendy's and
Denny's down the street ran out of food, sending everyone to them for cooked
food.
