This evening I counted *at least* 26 Vesper Sparrows on one relatively small
portion of our family farm in Jefferson County. I suspect that there were
another 10-12 nearby from what I'd seen and heard earlier in they day, but I
couldn't get everywhere all at once to be sure. I'm certain this is a high
count for my farm and probably a personal high.
I looked up the previous high count for KY; it was 40+ birds along a rural road
in Pulaski County by Jackie Elmore in 1981. Guess what the date was? Yep . . .
March 28th. There are always exceptions to migratory patterns in birds, but the
consistency that many species exhibit always amaze me!
