I'm falling into the trap that I tell myself not to get caught by . . . having
data entered into eBird (in this case by Brian Wulker) but failing to post to
BIRDKY . . .
Last Friday, Aug 30th, Brian Wulker and I birded Minor Clark Hatchery/Cave Run
Lake in hopes of finding a few waterbirds of interest. There was no sign of the
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck present st the hatchery a couple of weeks ago, but
we found 9 species of shorebirds including a juv. Baird's Sandpiper (still
present yesterday by Vicki Sandage; photos). Otherwise just commoners. Most of
the shorebirds are now juvies.
Up on the lake, we found not a single waterbird of interest; just a few
cormorants. On Aug 22, 2019, Scott Barrett photographed a sub-adult Brown
Pelican on the lake out from the Stony Point Boat Ramp by the dam but it has
not been reported again.
We also birded in the woods a bit and tallied 13 species of warblers, but most
were lingering breeders. Did have Blue-winged, Chestnut-sided, and Blackburnian.
