We haven’t noticed any strange bird activity in northern Franklin County! I
hope people aren’t spraying the cicadas!!
What would we do without nature? I never want to know!

I don't think this news has made it to BIRDKY, but there is apparently an
epidemic of very sick and dying fledgling birds, mostly Blue Jays, of late.
Most or all of these birds are originating in areas where there are many
periodical cicadas. Tests are being run on specimens to try to determine what
is the cause.

We've had a fair number out in the Douglass Hills-Middletown area, with
activity highly dependent on weather. Nothing like what's going on inside the
Watterson, though. Have seen predation by large flocks of starlings, as well
as by Northern Cardinals.

I have gone down to view the spectacle at Big Rock in Cherokee Park twice
now, seemed to be more than 2004. I did 2 weeks ago however have a single
cicada making noise in the second tallest tree in the neighborhood, which
was cool and a first for anywhere I have lived. If I were still living in
Clifton I would assume, I would be overwhelmed.

We now have a lot of cicadas. Can’t say that they have landed on me, yet,
but they appear to be everywhere. Very loud, too! So, at first they were
really scant, but their numbers have picked up quite a bit. I’m guessing
the temperatures have something to do with it. Northern Franklin County.

They are all over the place in the Highlands in Louisville. I have 10-20
land on me every day, I pull a couple hundred out of the pool every day,
I have to sweep them off our porches daily and do a cicada check every
time I come in the house to make sure I don't have a hitchhiker. We have
500-1000 on one of our Crape Myrtles out back right now. The shrub is
tall, so there could be more. It's really quite interesting to go
through one of these events. This is my second one and I have been
looking forward to it. The one thing that is a bit annoying is that they
do love loud noises, so when I start the weed eater or the lawnmower,
they come flocking to it!

I guess the cicadas are very regional. I live in southern Louisville
(Okolona) and have only found two shed shells so far this Spring. I was
looking forward to the spectacle. I suppose I’ll head to Cherokee to see
the Kites (a lifer for me) and check out the cicada numbers.

Very disappointed not to have some in my yard. Was looking forward to
the chickens chasing them. Nary a one.

Subject: [birdky] RPT: Speculation about a day in the life of a
Mississippi Kite in Louisville right now . . .
Jim Arnett and I visited the margin of Cherokee Park this morning to see
if the Mississippi Kites that have nested there in recent years had
returned. No one has reported them this spring/early summer. The kites
are present and appear to be incubating. The amusing aspect to their
daily life right now, however, is that I doubt they even need to fly to
catch food; there are *so* many periodical cicadas there that we saw
several times when cicadas were flying by or landing within reach of the
birds! I imagine that even the incubating bird is able to snag one every
once in awhile as they fly back and forth to wherever they are going.
One has to wonder what they are thinking probably filling their bellies
within mere minutes of awaking in the morning . . .
