Kyle Bixler and I spent several hours this morning walking the fields at
Perryville Battlefield State Historical Site, and ended up with nice
list of species. The highlight was watching a pair of Loggerhead Shrikes
fly around, engaging in wing fluttering displays and vocalizing nearly
constantly. At one point, one of the shrikes attacked a group of
bluebirds twenty yards from where I was standing, albeit unsuccessfully.
I don't think I've had a shrike dive over my head, wings folded in, before.
There were lots of sparrows of the expected species. I had several
glimpses of a sparrow that initially looked like a Field Sparrow but
flashed white outer tail feathers in flight. I lost it in the weeds
before getting a really good look. Perhaps a leucistic individual?
A massive grackle flock included one individual with a white tail and
one with white primaries. I was surprised at how homogeneous the grackle
flock was, but we did eventually pick out a couple of Red-winged
Blackbirds, a couple of cowbirds, and seven Rusty Blackbirds, before the
arrival of a Red-shouldered Hawk pulled our attention from the grackle
flock.
