A number of local birders out on the river today. Continuing nice array of
waterfowl on the river. A lot of fields of 1/2 inch or so solid and shattered
ice from the main basin up to above Six-Mile Island. Much of the Falls of the
Ohio off the overlook frozen solid, too.
Highlights included the continuing imm. male White-winged Scoter, although the
ice flows seemed to cause him to abandon the Jeff Waterfront after late
morning. Several flocks of 10-30 mixed divers including both scaup, goldeneye,
bufflehead, canvasback, and redhead. A few Hooded Mergansers, Ring-necked
Ducks, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, and a single Ruddy Duck also thrown in the
mix. Not many dabblers. The imm. Blue Goose continues with the flock of Canadas
foraging on the IN shore at Jeffersonville. During mid-day a group of gulls
dropped in to the Jeff waterfront that included at least nine Herring Gulls of
mixed ages.
So the conditions for observing the swans below the dam were horrible. It took
us a couple of different trips to finally feel relatively confident that the
five were Mutes with two more coming in and joining them around noon. None are
full adults with obvious orange-and-black bills, so the distance and heat waves
continually made it difficult to assess the actual colors and patterns.
