Matt Stickel and I birded northern Land Between the Lakes and the environs
around Ky Dam and Barkley Dam today.
Always great to experience spring migration in this area; there are just so
many more bird than in central KY. We tallied 21 species of warblers, seeing 18
of them. Highlights included single Cerulean Warblers on the "Cypress Creek
Loop" and along Eddyville Landing Road in LBL, a total of *8* Orange-crowned
Warblers, a couple of Blackpolls (Ky Dam Village SRP), and a Cape May (LBL, Ky
Lake Scenic Drive). The highlight in LBL, though, was a Scissor-tailed
Flycatcher, foraging low from weed stalks in the open field on the south side
of Moss Creek Day Use Area access road. It was associating loosely with at
least a half dozen Eastern Kingbirds. Also had a noisy flock of at least 20
singing Rusty Blackbirds on the Cypress Creek Loop.
There are virtually no gulls over on Ky Lake and at Ky Dam; all the action is
over at Barkley, where at least 300 Bonaparte's Gulls can be found above and
below the dam; we had a second-year (first-cycle) Laughing Gull sitting on the
lock wall railing. Still a few hundred American White Pelicans continue along
with pretty Forster's Terns and a single Caspian.
On the Sledd Creek embayment of Ky Lake, there was a basic plumaged Pacific
Loon, possibly the one that wintered in the area. It was visible across the bay
from the boat ramp. Out on Ky Lake, the only thing really noticeable from the
dam/beach area were 8-10 Common Loons.
I will get a few eBird lists entered soon.
