Eddie Huber, Matt Stickel, and myself visited northeast KY on Sunday. We saw the Black-capped Chickadee at Blaine, KY, again; Eddie got a few decent photos despite the poor lighting and elusive movements of this rather skittish individual. Other birds of note in the Yatesville Lake WMA area included about 35 American Black Ducks, a pair of Purple Finches, Red-breasted Nuthatch, both kinglets, and Hermit Thrush. We walked a bit of the WMA hoping for a Ruffed Grouse but had no luck. On our way back west, we visited the Minor Clark Fish Hatchery and scanned from a few points on Cave Run Lake. Waterfowl were practically non-existent, but tallies of at least 8 Common Loons and 12+ Horned Grebes were of interest for late winter. We also had 2,000+ Ring-billed Gulls, 6 Northern Pintails, scattered Buffleheads, and 11 Ring-necked Ducks along with small numbers of more common species. bpb, Frankfort
