A couple of days ago I heard an odd begging call coming from the Carolina Wren nest in a box on my back porch. The nestling Carolina Wrens have a unique begging call and this sounded more drawn out and trilled like that of a Brown-headed Cowbird. I peeked in this morning and sure enough there is a big nestling cowbird in there with at least two wrens. I am amazed at this because of the site of the nest box, which has an open end of about 4" x 4" [surely enough to accommodate a female cowbird], but it is tucked in the upper corner of the porch and I haven't seen a cowbird around here for some time. Also, this is actually later than I thought cowbirds would lay eggs; typically the females will lay into early July, and this clutch was probably initiated about two weeks ago, so right at the end point in the cowbird nesting season. For some species (Wood Thrushes, Indigo Buntings, etc.), it is the late season nesting that finally allows them to raise "cowbird-free" broods of young. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/default.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
