Steve & Teresa Graham, Sarah Bell, and I birded Morgan Pond in southern
Christian County yesterday evening. It certainly was nice to have some sunlight
and warm temps!
The pools are beginning to draw down now as the surrounding area has missed the
recent excessive rains. Yesterday, most of the shorebirds were on the pool east
of Bullard Lane. Highlights included 700-750+ Semipalmated Sandpipers, good
numbers of Semi Plovers (75+), White-rumped Sandpipers (20-25), and Dunlin
(35-40) with 2 Stilt Sandpipers, 5 Short-billed Dowitchers, and 2 Wilson's
Phalaropes (male & female; latter by itself on main pool). One Greater and
about 6 Lesser Yellowlegs remain. Of the 7 Pied-billed Grebes, one was on a
nest that is unfortunately about to be left high and dry by the receding water.
The "luck" of the evening was finding an American Bittern foraging in the weeds
along the main pool.
