After remaining cloudy to mostly cloudy all day, the clouds just up and dissipated after dark on Saturday and three of us watched the moon from about 9:15 to 10:30 or so. This front didn't kick on through like the forecasters originally anticipated and winds were never really that good for a heavy migration after its passage. You could tell it wasn't heavy simply by the lack of overhead flight calls once the moon began to rise. However, this time of year some birds have to be moving on anything but crummy weather and we were not disappointed. The migration was roughly 1/2 of what I have experienced on good nights, with a bird or two every minute or so. There would be 1-3 minutes without anything, then 2 or 3 all at once. At first, I was seeing mostly bats moving (maybe outnumbering birds 5-10:1) but then birds took over. We saw lots of little guys with some thrushy looking things and two possible or probable cuckoos. It is always neat! During the day, Amy and I had about 60 species on the farm including 3 female/imm. Golden-winged Warblers. Not many other highlights. Most interesting bird of the day was a Bobolink I flushed in the afternoon while doing some mowing. Barred and Great Horned owls were heard while we moonwatched. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
