Oh, that poor vulture! Good thing you came along.

I spent the morning conducting a third Breeding Bird Survey in four mornings.
This one was in northern Taylor County and it had to be the nicest morning I
ever recall doing a route. The temp was 52 degrees at the start and
conditions remained nearly calm the entire four plus hours. The route's first
15 stops are in a valley that is about as birdy as any in the state. I had
calling Chucks and Whips both before the route began and at the 2nd stop (one
of each). All the rest was pretty normal.
Yesterday's route was mostly in Washington County, Indiana. It is my favorite
route because of the diversity; I tallied 85 species plus a couple of
additional species heard in between stops. The highlight was noticing a
Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest at one stop and a calling screech-owl at the
last stop at 10:00 am!
On the farm, my American Kestrels have fledged this week. It is always fun to
watch the young as they develop their flying skills. As I was watching the
family mid-day, I noticed two Mississippi Kites foraging over the western
side of the farm.
On my way back from the BBS route this morning, I stopped by the Melco Flood
Retention Basin. Single Semipalmated and White-rumped Sandpipers were the
only tardy migrants, but I had an interesting encounter with a Turkey Vulture
chronicled by a few photos at this link:
